Casemiro’s dismal showing at Selhurst Park on Monday has left countless fans and pundits questioning whether it’s time for him to pull the curtains on his European career.
When he eventually does, there’s no doubt that he’ll go down in the history books as one of the greatest in his position, as well as a Real Madrid legend.
Until then, though, and barring any resurgent run of form, Casemiro’s sophomore Manchester United campaign is seeing his world-class reputation get tarnished.
He has been operating outside of his comfort zone as of late due to the debilitating injury crisis taking the majority of the centre-halves as victims. In those four matches that he’s been deployed in the position, the Reds have conceded 10 goals, which came courtesy of Coventry City, Sheffield United, Burnley and Crystal Palace.
The latter match led to Casemiro making unwanted history after he was dribbled past eight times in total across the 90 minutes in South London, the most of any player in a single Premier League match this term.
Journalist analyses Casemiro’s fall from grace
Mirror writer John Cross weighed in on the veteran’s woes, saying (via GiveMeSport): “If I were Erik ten Hag, I would be seriously concerned about whether the players were still putting in a shift.
“There were so many worrying performances. Casemiro, I know he’s playing out of position in central defence, but there is a player who has scaled the top of their game and been absolutely phenomenal.
“He just looks so out of touch, so out of his depth. I just don’t know quite where it goes from here.”
