Manchester United are working to sign the Netherlands international defender Matthijs de Ligt from German giants Bayern Munich.

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are now in direct contact regarding the 24-year-old central defender and it remains to be seen whether they can secure an agreement.

The defender’s agent Rafaela Pimenta is working on a potential move as well. The defender is keen on a move to Manchester United and he will hope that the two clubs can finalise an agreement soon. The Dutch international defender has worked under Erik ten Hag during their time together at Ajax and a reunion will be quite attractive for all parties.

Matthijs de Ligt would improve Man United

It is no secret that Manchester United need to improve their defensive unit and the defender could prove to be a quality acquisition. The 24-year-old is still relatively young and he is likely to improve with coaching and experience. He could develop into a key player for the club and it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can agree on a reasonable fee for the defender. He could sign a contract with the Premier League club until the summer of 2029.

Bayern Munich are open to selling the player this summer, but they could look to recoup a substantial amount of money for him.

De Ligt has already proven himself in the Bundesliga and he will look to test himself in the Premier League if the transfer goes through. He has the physical and technical attributes to succeed in English football and he could establish himself as a player for the club.

Manchester United conceded 58 goals in the league last season and they need quality additions in order to tighten up at the back.
