Moumbagna, a fraud?

Even if Jean-Louis Gasset compared him to Jean-Pierre Papin, Faris Moumbagna continues to be strongly criticized for his level of play.

Sunday evening, while Olympique de Marseille seemed to be heading towards another defeat away in Ligue 1, Faris Moumbagna managed to equalize in the 96th minute. And not in just any way. Following a harmless cross deflected by Suazo’s head, the Cameroonian international took the ball back with a sublime back volley, which found its way into Guillaume Restes’ top corner.

Already a scorer against Benfica in the Europa League last Thursday, the 23-year-old striker nevertheless continues to be strongly criticized. “It will weigh on the defenses. He’s a hell of an athlete but football is played in the feet, it’s not just played in the muscles or in the legs, recalled Christophe Dugarry on RMC. He showed such technical limitations that it’s almost surprising to see that a player with so few technical qualities can play in Ligue 1.”

Moumbagna, ” it stings my eyes “

And the sports consultant questions his real level of play: “We saw things, it stings the eyes! There are guys who have never played professionally, or even in Ligue 1, Ligue 2 or National, they must say to themselves: ‘but how does this guy manage to play professionally?’ He must have qualities, so far he has not been able to show them. But if he’s there, he must still have something.”

On January 20, OM leaders recruited Faris Moumbagna from FK Bodø/Glimt, a Norwegian club. The Cameroonian international (seven caps with the Indomitable Lions) had signed a contract binding him for the next four seasons to the Marseille club.
