At this point, Barcelona’s struggles with Nike and an attempt to terminate the contract mutually between the two parties are well-documented.

The Catalans are quite dissatisfied with the sponsorship money the American brand have to offer, citing their world-high record shirt sales over the past several years.

Several of the current stars in the team, including Gavi, Pedri, and Ronald Araujo feature among the players with the highest shirt sales in Europe, alongside established names like Robert Lewandowski, whose #9 jersey regularly clears stock.

Another player among the Barcelona rank that could soon make this list is breakthrough star Lamine Yamal.

The 16-year-old, only in his first professional season of football, has stolen all the limelight and is touted to be the heir to Lionel Messi’s throne at Barcelona. Perhaps in more ways than one.

Barcelona ready to make monumental decision

As revealed to Barça Universal by journalist Adrian Sanchez, who is close to the club, Barcelona are already having conversations about giving Lamine Yamal huge responsibility at the club next season.

They are thinking about handing the teenager Lionel Messi’s iconic #10 jersey next season. They believe it would be a marketing bombshell, and are of the opinion that Yamal deserves this honour.

After all, Yamal has shown no signs of pressure so far, and is already handling an important role in the team as the starter on the right-wing.

He has been one of the very few positives in a season of unexpected dismay, and has already shown signs of superstardom with exceptional performances against Athletic Club, Mallorca, Real Betis, and even Brazil.

Huge responsibility for Yamal, but worth the risk

Handing a 16-year-old arguably the heaviest jersey in the world of sports would undoubtedly be a risky decision from Barcelona.

The last bearer of the #10, Ansu Fati, stands testament to this. Currently plying his trade on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion, the Spaniard is expected to leave the club permanently this summer.

However, a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.

Not only has Yamal been playing well beyond his years already, but handing him Leo’s number could eventually carve the path for him to greatness.

And leaving a jersey as important as that vacant for another season could well be taken as a sign of apostasy.

Lanky, left-footed right-winger teenager who is making decisions on the pitch seasoned professionals can only dream of, now where have we heard this story before? Trust the kid.
