The Racing Club de Lens is going through a very mixed 2023-24 season. The last outing of Sang et Or was again marked by controversy.

Despite an honorable sixth place in the first part of the table, the Racing Club de Lens must face many upheavals during this 2023-24 season. Less than a year after a historic campaign concluded with a runner-up place behind Paris Saint-Germain, the Artesian club is plunged into a turbulent climate, behind the scenes as well as in the stands.

After an experience in the Champions League, Lens had to re-mobilize in Ligue 1. But the key players in the squad have experienced varying fortunes, like Elye Wahi. Arriving in the 2023 offseason to replace Loïs Openda, the French Espoir international has been through all the states this season.

Lens: a gentrified public?

Author of great flashes on the European scene, Elye Wahi has only scored 7 goals in Ligue 1. A lack of success which generated whistles at the Stade Bollaert during the Lensois match against Clermont, Saturday evening (1-0). For Brice Samba, the attitude of this section of supporters was unacceptable.

It’s a scandal, you’re at home, you’re leading 1-0, your attacker is whistled, I’ve rarely seen that, thundered the guardian of the Blood and Gold. I don’t know why he is whistled. Because he missed… But who doesn’t make mistakes? For me it’s a scandal. Maybe last year we got people so used to winning everything, to being good every game. People may have changed their standards, people need to come back down quickly“, concluded the French international, very upset. The message got through.
