In a sensational update, journalist Maria Garrido (via Mas que pelotas) has claimed that a section of the Barcelona board members want both manager Xavi Hernandez and director Deco out of the club right away.
Xavi has already announced his decision to leave Barça at the end of the season. The manager felt that the team needs a new dynamic and that his exit would be the best for everyone involved.
There was hope that Xavi’s announcement would spark a positive reaction from the squad. But after wins against Alaves and Osasuna, the Catalans stumbled to a 3-3 draw against 19th-placed Granada this past weekend, putting the manager back under the spotlight.
Some board members want immediate change
As such, some of the board members at Barcelona are keen on seeing an immediate change in the managerial position, with things not improving under Xavi.
It was reported on Monday that Barça president Joan Laporta continues to trust the 44-year-old club legend and will not remove him before the end of the season.
However, if Barcelona slip up against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, things could deteriorate further for Xavi and with growing disgruntlement among the board members, the president might be forced to take action.
What happened with Deco?
As for Deco, the sporting director gave an interview to a Portuguese outlet this past weekend during which it appeared that the former midfielder had claimed that Barcelona need to move on from their DNA and move in a new direction.
While those comments were denied and the author of the article issued clarification that Deco’s statements were interpreted wrongly, it appears that they have still ruffled some feathers in the boardroom.
As such, certain members of the board want Deco also gone immediately, although it is impossible that such a change will be made right now.
Intriguingly though, reports emerged on Monday claiming that Laporta had met with ex-director Mateu Alemany over a potential return, although the club denied it.
