Manchester United are prepared to go toe-to-toe with Arsenal in pursuit of Crystal Palace stalwart Marc Guehi this summer.
This season’s debilitating injury crisis at Old Trafford has increased the club’s need to sign a centre-back ten-fold.
As it stands, only one out of the six senior centre-halves is available due to fitness issues, which has led to Casemiro having to deputise alongside Harry Maguire in the backline for the past three matches.
Just one signing in the position may not be enough given that Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane will depart in June upon their contract expirations, and if there’s one thing the club hierarchy have learnt over the past eight months, it’s that depth is critical.
Therefore, the Reds have found themselves linked to a plethora of options, including Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo and Palace’s Guehi.
Guehi’s potential pricetag revealed
It is believed that the Eagles value their talent at £55 million (The Mirror), with both the Gunners and United tipped for a summer battle over his signature.
Guehi, 23, has been sidelined since early February after he underwent surgery on a knee complaint. He’s expected to return before the season draws to a close and could well be named in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, where he’ll look to add to his nine senior England caps.
A product of Chelsea’s academy, the Blues have the option to match any bids for the defender due to a clause they inserted into the terms of his £18 million sale to Palace in 2021.
