England will face Brazil and Belgium in friendlies at Wembley, with Southgate expected to name a 25-man group for the games.

But he will have a bigger selection headache come June, with UEFA confirming squads will be reduced to 23 for the Euros.

When is the England Euro 2024 squad announcement?

Southgate is yet to confirm when he will name his 23-man party.

However, the deadline for the final 26-man squads for Euro 2020 was midnight on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 - with the tournament getting underway Friday, June 11.

If UEFA follows the same format then Southgate would be expected to confirm his Euro 2024 squad by Tuesday, June 4.

The tournament then starts a week-Friday on June 14, with hosts Germany battling Scotland.

FIFA rules differ from UEFA, with countries having to name their squad only six days prior to the opening match of the World Cup.

That saw Southgate name his Qatar squad earlier on Thursday, November 10, 2022 - with the deadline not until Monday.

The England boss has already warned his England players he cannot afford fitness gambles after UEFA reduced squads from 26 to 23.

“We can take far fewer gambles than we were able to take for the last two tournaments where it was 26,” said Southgate in November.

“The size of the squad makes it a different sort of thought process because you’ve had that leeway in the last couple of tournaments to take players that weren’t going to be fit for the first couple of games. Or a bit of cover in certain positions that you might or might not have needed.

“This time the physical conditioning of players is going to be really important. The ability for players to bat out six, seven games.

“We know, having been to the end of two tournaments, that physically the demands on that is far greater than we would have known had we not been through that experience.

“So we know that is a huge requirement. If you can only take two for each position, players that are adaptable are helpful.

“Players that can play more than one position is helpful. But equally players who are physically vulnerable, we will have got to think very carefully about.”
