Willy Kambwala hails Manchester United team-mate as ‘too good’

Manchester United’s 2023/24 for most parts, is one to forget for almost everyone involved at first-team level. But it was a memorable campaign for some players and Willy Kambwala falls into that category.

The young centre-back made his first-team debut in 2024 and continued to be used sporadically by Erik ten Hag as injuries ate away at United’s options in defence.

By the end of the campaign, he was a full first-team member alongside some of his fellow academy graduates, including Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Mainoo, the main success story of the season, has rocketed in stardom this season and is in line to feature for England in this summer’s European Championship.

The midfielder scored the winning goal in last month’s FA Cup final against and Kambwala has now described his team-mate as ‘too good’.

“I’m a player, but first of all I am a supporter. I am a fan. When I see my boys, my brothers shining, I am the first one who’s going to clap for them,” Kambwala told BackOfTheNet, via United in Focus.

“I’m the first one that’s going to be happy for them. When I see the level that Garnacho is now, how Kobbie is just too good, and how Amad is able to take the opportunity, I will always be the first one that is happy. Singing with the fans when they sing their names – I’m so proud.”

Kambwala will be hoping for an even bigger role next season and that is becoming increasingly likely as United face personnel concerns in that department.

Raphael Varane has left the club after his contract expired and Jonny Evans is likely to do the same. There are also question marks over the futures of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, with both players entering the final 12 months of their contracts.
